Environmental diversity is one of the key elements of the adaptive theory of thermal comfort. Creating such diversity by natural means is the objective of this proposal for new residential development on a post-industrial site near Florence. The design provides the means of achieving all-year thermal comfort without the need for conventional space heating and cooling. Passive design strategies have been refined by detailed analytic work providing diverse environmental combinations of light, temperature, privacy and views. Occupants can freely choose the environmental conditions they prefer ranging from close visual and acoustic contact with other spaces to high level of privacy.
